Young animators bring modern history to life!

28-May-2015

Film in Afan recently had the opportunity to work with two very different groups in the locality to bring modern history to life, for future generations.

Year 6 from Pen Afan Primary School were delighted to team up with volunteers from the South Wales Miners Museum, to capture their experiences of life during the 1984 Miners Strike in the Afan valley and surrounding area of Maesteg and Neath Port Talbot.

With help from Gritty realism productions, two short films were made covering the two sides of the strike.

Brynmor Jones who worked as a miner for 40 years contributed to one of the films which includes animations made by the talented year 6 students and narration by Mr Jones.

"I haven't really spoken about my experiences on camera like this before. It was quite nerve wracking because there are still such mixed feeling in the Afan valley  about what went on during the strike. At the miners museum there are those of us who went out on strike and those that continued working. We still feel strongly about what happened to our livelihoods but try to leave politics aside so that we can teach young people about what life as a miner in the South Wales Valleys was all about."

Kodi Protheroe  from Pen Afan Primary School was one of 9 year 6 students who helped bring the narration by Mr Jones to life.

"We sat down in the morning and got told the story of the strikes. We listened to the recordings and then we were given paper, scissors, pencils and charcoal  to do drawings of the people from the story. In the afternoon we learned to how to use the stop motion camera to bring our drawings to life. It was lots of fun and now we know how to do this some of us want to be animators when we finish school."

Both of the films were screened at a recent event at South Wales Miners Museum.

Jordan Taylor who works at the museum commented on the collaboration.

"This is the first time that we have done anything like this. The volunteers got a lot out of telling their stories. I was amazed to see the final  result of the volunteers and the year six pupils it would be amazing to work together in the future to compile  an archive of these stories for the future"
